Rio Grande Valley CASA

Help Change a Childs Story

Every Child Needs a Hero.

Rio Grande Valley CASA Volunteers provide a voice for abused and neglected children in New Mexico’s overburdened child welfare system. Our volunteers stand up for the children of Rio Grande Valley and work to give them a voice and help better their lives.

We empower everyday citizens with the ability to transform the lives of abused and neglected children.

We advocate for the best interest of abused and neglected children…

Becoming a CASA will give you the tools to speak up for a child who’s been abused or neglected.

Imagine the experience of children who are removed from their homes because the people responsible for protecting them have not. These children find themselves in a world filled with social workers, lawyers, judges, and courtrooms where life-altering decisions are made on their behalf.

A CASA is a court-appointed, trained, and committed adult who ensures that each child’s individual needs remain a priority in an over-burdened child welfare system. They get to know the child while also gathering information from the child’s family, teachers, doctors, caregivers, and anyone else involved in the child’s life in order to make independent and informed recommendations to help the judge decide what’s best for the child.
If you are looking for a meaningful and enriching volunteer opportunity and want to do something about child abuse, becoming a CASA is right for you.

Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Volunteers

Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Volunteers get to know the child(ren) while also gathering information from the child’s family, teachers, doctors, therapists, caregivers, and anyone else involved in the child’s life in order to make independent and informed recommendations to help the judge decide what’s best for the child. They are a consistent adult presence for a child or family of children throughout their entire CPS case.

Specific Tasks:

  • Spend quality time with the child or children you’re appointed to
  • Communicate regularly with the child(ren)’s parents, relatives, placement,
teachers, doctors, therapists, caregivers and anyone else involved in the child’s life
  • Participate in case meetings and review case files
  • Gather and document information on your case
  • Formulate recommendations on what’s in the best interest of the children
  • Submit a court report and present your recommendations to the judge in the courtroom.

Get Involved Today!

Imagine the experience of children who are removed from their home, their family, their siblings, and everything they know and care about. They find themselves in a world filled with social workers, lawyers, judges, and courtrooms where life-altering decisions are made on their behalf.

By becoming a CASA volunteer, you can help provide a voice for children who have been abused or neglected. CASA volunteers are individuals from all walks of life who speak up for a child’s best interests in court. You are not a foster parent, you are a voice making a real difference at a critical turning point in the child’s life.

Training & Support

We will provide you with all the training and support you need to serve as an effective advocate. After training you will be sworn in as a Court Appointed Special Advocate by a judge. Once assigned a case, you will be paired with a staff professional who will support and guide you every step of the way.

If you are looking for a truly unique and impactful volunteer opportunity and you care about the best interest of children, CASA is right for you.
